Abstract

Diarrhea is a problem of defecating with a liquid consistency more than 3 times a day. Diarrhea is the main cause of malnutrition, which can cause death and extraordinary events. The Guava plant (Psidium guajava L) is known by the Indonesian people as a herbal medicine that can be used to treat various diseases. Local people in Indonesia use guava leaves as an anti-diarrhea. The purpose of this study was to test the antidiarrheal activity and determine the optimum concentration of guava leaf ethanol extract (Psidium guajava L). Extraction was carried out by maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. Mice were divided into five groups consisting of 3 mice; negative control group (CMC Na 0.5%), positive control group (Loperamide HCL), extract group (doses of 200,300 and 400 mg/kgBW). Each group was induced with 1 mL of oleum ricini orally, the group was treated orally and observations were made on the onset of diarrhea, frequency of diarrhea, and duration of diarrhea for five hours. The conclusion of this study is that guava leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 400 mg/kgBW provides the most effective antidiarrheal activity in white male mice (Mus Musculus L) induced by oleum ricini. So it is necessary to conduct a toxicity test of guava leaves with a dose of 400 mg/kgBW in white male mice (Mus Musculus L). So that its safety can be known when used as an antidiarrheal.
