Abstract

Background: Medication non-adherence in patients with diabetes mellitus is a major challenge in achieving effective therapy, which can increase the risk of chronic complications. Digital technologies, such as medication reminder apps, have shown potential in improving medication adherence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of education and support in the use of medication reminder apps on medication adherence and clinical control in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Methods: A quasi-experimental design with an intervention group receiving education and support in the use of the app and a control group receiving standard care.

Results: Therapy adherence significantly increased in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Use of the app also showed a trend towards lower glycemic index values.

Conclusion: Education and support in the use of medication reminder apps are effective in improving therapy adherence in patients with diabetes mellitus and may contribute to better clinical outcomes.
