Abstract
The program to increase breastfeeding, especially exclusive breastfeeding, has had a broad impact on the nutritional status of babies in Indonesia. Referring to the breastfeeding program target of 80%, national data on exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia in 2019 was 54% and has not yet reached the target.
Based on data from the Riau Provincial Health Service in 2019, the percentage of exclusive breastfeeding in Riau Province was 37.2%, while in Kampar Regency the percentage of exclusive breastfeeding was 36.3% (Riau Provincial Health Service, 2020).
The low achievement of exclusive breastfeeding in Kampar Regency is caused by a lack of good cooperation between program managers and the community, especially for mothers with babies. Lack of lactation counseling services by health workers, low knowledge of mothers regarding the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, in addition to the habit of giving prelacteal feeding due to socio-cultural factors that consider exclusive breastfeeding to be unnatural (Kampar District Health Service, 2015).
Terusan Village, Maro Sebo Ilir District, is one
of the villages where exclusive breastfeeding has not reached the target in Batanghari Regency. Local midwives have been active in counseling and promoting exclusive breastfeeding starting from pregnancy until the postpartum period, however, the lack of public awareness of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding is still an unresolved problem in the village.
