Abstract
Menopause is a sign of the end of the reproductive period for women. The population of postmenopausal women in the United States is estimated to reach 20% in 2025. The average woman experiences menopause at the age of 51 years, while her life expectancy is around
80 years. Menopause is associated with a significant decrease in estrogen hormone levels. This causes systemic vascular resistance, which is a major factor in blood pressure circulation. Increased production of vasoconstrictor agents triggers arterial stiffness and pathological changes occur where smooth muscle vascular cells are resistant to vasodilator signals. This is because in menopausal women, agents that function to suppress vasoconstriction and maintain vascular function are lost and contribute to decreased vascular reactivity. In addition, during menopause there is an increase in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and a positive relationship develops between SNA and blood pressure, so that when there is an increase in SNA, it also directly increases blood pressure. Efforts to prevent hypertension can be done with early detection through measuring blood pressure and risk factors for NCDs in health care facilities such as health centers, clinics and health posts. Furthermore, hypertension prevention can be done through changes in lifestyle to be healthier by avoiding cigarette smoke, eating a healthy diet, doing physical activity and not consuming alcohol.
